This article is written for those who were searching for a detailed and simple for the understanding guide on how to install Windows Server 2008 R2.

I highly recommend never using any third-party builds of Windows. Use only original installation images. This will help you avoid a lot of problems and get maximum performance and stability.

I always recommend using English editions of Windows Server. As practice shows, the original (English) versions of Windows work more stable, moreover, it will be easier for you to communicate in the same language with professionals in case of problems or if you want to exchange experiences.

In order to start installing Windows Server 2008 R2, you need to boot from the Windows Server 2008 R2 installation DVD. To do this, you must first select the CD/DVD drive in the BIOS of your server, or use the Boot Menu features. On each server, the BIOS and Boot Menu call buttons are different, but usually when the server boots, what keys you need to press are written on the screen in order to enter the BIOS or the Boot Menu.

The appearance of the BIOS on different servers may vary, but the ideology remains the same.

You need to go to the “Boot” tab and select “Boot Device Priority”.

Next, you need to move the “CD/DVD drive” to the very top.

Now you need to save your changes.

To do this, go to the “Exit” tab and select “Save Changes and Exit”.

Next, confirm the saving of the new configuration.

Select “OK.”

Now, when you restart your computer, you can boot from the Windows Server 2008 R2 installation DVD. To do this, you will need to press any key on the keyboard when the message “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD” appears.

After you successfully boot from the Windows Server 2008 R2 installation DVD, the first thing to do is to select the regional settings. Our example uses the English version of Windows Server 2008 R2, so it’s best to use the default settings.

Click on the “Next” button.

Click on the “Install now” button.

Please note, if you need to install Windows Server 2008 R2 in Server Core mode, then you need to select “Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (Server Core Installation)”.

This example installs Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (Full Installation).

Select “Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard (Full Installation)” and click on the “Next” button.

Now you need to accept the license terms.

Click on the “Next” button.

At this step, two installation options are offered:

  1. “Upgrade”. This is not the best option. As practice shows, numerous programs may not be compatible with the new operating system, and after the update, you will not be able to work with them, in addition, there is a chance to drag problems from the old operating system to the new one, thus losing any stability.
  2. “Custom”. This is the best option for installing any version of the Windows operating system. It allows you to start working with the system “from scratch”, so after installation, you will get maximum performance and stability. All that remains is to install the drivers and the usual software for work.

Now you need to choose on which drive the new operating system will be installed and allocate space for installation.

If you have more than one disk installed or there are already several partitions on the disk, all this will be displayed at this stage. You must be careful and understand in advance on which partition you want to install the operating system.

In this example, one 60 GB drive is installed. In order to create a partition on the disk, select the “Drive options” item.

Then select “New”.

In this case, all free disk space will be allocated for the system, so we leave the value in the “Size” section by default.

Click on the “Apply” button.

The operating system notifies you that it may need to create additional partitions on the disk to store system files.

Click on the “OK” button.

Thus, all the free space on the disk was allocated for the operating system, but at the same time, the system reserved a small partition for itself.

Now you need to select the partition on which you intend to install the operating system and click on the “Next” button.

The process of installing the operating system has begun.

The computer will automatically restart several times.

After the installation is completed, the operating system will begin to prepare the server for work.

Now you need to specify a strong password for the “Administrator” account.

Click on the “OK” button.

Specify a strong password and press “Enter”.

The password for the Administrator account has been set.

Click on the “OK” button.

Windows Server 2008 R2 installation is now complete.

Now you need to install the drivers. They can always be downloaded from the device manufacturer’s website, in the tech support section.
